Как привычки калифорнийцев привели к засухе

Засуха в одном из самых богатых штатов США Калифорнии длится уже четыре года. Природа штата просто не справилась с человеческим фактором: людей в Калифорнии становилось все больше, а экономить воду они не собирались, активно поливая газоны, обширные поля для гольфа и бадминтона. В ближайшие десятилетия мир может повторить судьбу Калифорнии и столнуться с дефицитом воды. ООН и прочие международные организации призывают экономить воду. Для этого существуют довольно простые правила.

Некоторые жители Калифорнии уже начали отказываться от зеленых газонов. Многие выкладывают в социальные сети фотографии лужаек, на которых теперь растут кактусы. Также американские пользователи Instagram активно публикуют фото пересохших озер и рек.

ESPM Postdoc Michael Thomas Bogan studies how drought and stream drying affect aquatic biodiversity in coastal California streams. He's seen big changes in the streams he studies at Point Reyes National Seashore - many dried up completely in just a few weeks in March. #CAdrought

And with that, Operation: Backyard Re-do is underway. On the agenda once the ginormous #Maple is all the way down (about 1/2 way done today by @justbesteveo ); remove rest of the grass and totally re-design. New backyard will be drought tolerant and 100% drip irrigation. Totally #DIY (with some help from friends on the front end). Should be a TON of work, but also fun. And hey, we might even get some $ back from @cityofroseville with their #cashforgrass program! After this project is done, we will have redone all of the landscape at our house (middle strip we share with neighbors @kelsey_vorhies_sahrai was done in 2013, front yard was done last summer and now the final piece. As much as it pains me to remove mature trees, this one was way too big for the lot, badly placed and infested with #boxelderbugs (several hundred all over our house for the last month plus). The neighbors hated it because of the mess and the roots and we couldn't do anything in the backyard because the root network is at the surface and takes up more than half of the backyard. We will plant new trees...but ones more suited to the lot size and a little more thoughtfully placed. #nomoregrass #cadrought #goodbyetocrappylandscaping #noshortcuts #doitright #yeehaw
